Review of harvest floor, chiller and boning room RFID deployments in industry (Stage 1)

Focus area: Hands-off processing
Program stream: Advanced manufacturing
Project number: 2021-1191

AMPC worked with RAMP to oversee a review of RFID deployment across the Australian red meat processing industry.

As part of the project, RAMP conducted several interviews and site visits with beef and sheep processing plants to better understand the successes and key challenges faced in deploying RFID systems.

The findings from each site indicated that electronic ear tags are scanned using an RFID reader and the data is sent to the NLIS database. While for hooks tracing, most processors have struggled to successfully implement reliable solutions as the RFID chip can be damaged or fall out when attached to a hook.
