Task Risk Industry Benchmark
Musculoskeletal injuries are among the most common and costly workplace health issues in the
Australian red meat processing industry.
They cause real harm to workers and significant financial pressure on businesses through compensation claims, lost time, and reduced productivity. Yet despite this, the industry has not had a consistent, objective way to measure physical risk across facilities or to identify where investment in safer work design would make the greatest difference.
The AMPC Task Risk Benchmarking Project was commissioned to address this directly, establishing for
the first time a standardised, evidence-based picture of ergonomic risk across Australian red meat
processing operations. The findings are intended for processing facility operators, safety managers,
equipment designers and industry bodies, giving them the evidence they need to make informed
decisions about workplace design and injury prevention investment.
