Multi-fuel biomass pilot study

20 November 2024
Focus area: Energy
Program stream: Sustainability
Project number: 2021-1211
The project demonstrated the successful operation of a biomass boiler using various locally sourced biomass fuels, achieving significant outcomes in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (>97%), lowering energy costs, and enhancing energy resilience.

By using biomass such as paunch, woodchips, and nut shells, the system achieved substantial savings compared to fossil fuels, $7.3M annually versus LPG while supporting the circular economy and mitigating waste management issues. Key insights included the importance of low-moisture, high-energy-density fuels and the economic and environmental benefits of adopting biomass energy systems.
