QR Helmets proof-of-concept project
JBS Australia is investigating whether emerging sensing technologies can help improve workplace safety, ergonomics and process flow in its processing facilities.
This project addressed a narrow, technical question: in a busy fabrication room, can a camera-based system reliably detect a simple reflective marker and estimate where in the room it is, without recording video and without relying on manual observation?
The project, funded by AMPC and co-funded by JBS, engaged the University of Adelaide, led by Dr Siu-Wai Ho, to build and evaluate a proof-of-concept system in the JBS Bordertown boning room. Cameras mounted around the work area detect passive reflective markers and generate location data used to understand area utilisation and process flow. Safety helmets provided a stable, elevated surface for the markers during the trial.
