Biomass Pelletisation Trial

29 October 2026
Focus area: Waste
Program stream: Sustainability
Project number: 2026-1076

This project considered pelletisation as a way to value add available organics, such as sludges and paunch streams generated at an Australian red meat processing plant, into a boiler fuel.

Options for using biomass pellets include blending with coal in an existing boiler, with the burn test confirming the technical viability but highlighting that coal fired boilers will be volume limited - that is limited by the volume of fuel that can be added into the combustion chamber, thereby limiting the percentage coal offset that can be achieved. The biomass pellet physical and thermodynamic properties were found to be ideal for direct firing in biomass boilers.
A pathway for the site to be a 100 per cent renewable thermal energy facility was developed.
