Translating food-grade red meat coproducts into evidence-supported bioactives
Population ageing is increasing demand for products that support health, function and independence later in life, creating sustained market pull for evidence-supported ingredients and products associated with healthy longevity. Australia's red meat industry enters this opportunity from a strong starting position.
Built for meat production and market access, Australian red meat processing systems provide much of the provenance, traceability and source assurance that higher-value biological materials may require.
Much of this biological material is currently directed into established commodity and ingredient markets.
The opportunity is not to displace those markets, but to build additional value above them by selectively
recovering and qualifying higher-value fractions where market demand, technical feasibility, evidence and
regulation support doing so. This project progressed CX-50, a freeze-dried preparation derived from bovine adipose tissue, from a commercial processing environment into an ethics-approved, TGA-notified first-in-human study.
