Sheep EID identification technology assessment continued

05 January 2026
Focus area: Traceability & integrity systems
Program stream: Product & process integrity
Project number: 2025-1070

Western Australian sheep producers and processors were required to adopt electronic identification (eID) by July 2025 to meet legislative requirements for improved traceability and biosecurity. This includes tagging all sheep with approved RFID devices, maintaining accurate NLIS records, and reporting all animal movements.

The project implemented an eID system across selected meat processing facilities, using RFID technology to enhance livestock tracking, compliance, and data accuracy. It was delivered in stages and supported by technology partners SCL (RFID systems) and Blue Trace (AI‑driven camera verification for sheep counts).
