Zero waste to landfill - RMP challenge

27 August 2022
Focus area: Waste
Program stream: Sustainability
Project number: 2021-1046
AMPC partnered with All Energy to demonstrate a pathway for Australian red meat processing plants to achieve zero solid waste to landfill. A wide range of organic and inorganic wastes were considered including soiled carboard, paper, plastics, construction wastes, inedible offal, and green wastes.

Testing for gasification of the co-mingled wastes was done to define waste composition, syngas and energy generated. The energy from waste pilot comprised an existing facility at the technology providers premises, and trials were completed using enriched air and pure O2. Analyses were done on the feedstock, char, gas output, and slag to suggest possible uses of by-products in a circular economy.

An ex-post cost benefit analysis was completed to determine the technical and economic viability of energy from solid waste for zero landfill.
