Steriliser water and energy optimisation

01 January 2021
Focus area: Energy
Program stream: Sustainability
Project number: 2020-1058
This project funded the design, build and evaluation of a new concept and operation for a knife and equipment sterilizer at an Australian red meat processing plant. It aimed to reduce water consumption by up to 70% along with other energy saving benefits.

A purpose-built sterilizer unit was designed by the plant and two prototypes were employed to trial the design.

As part of the project, hot water metering units were installed to accurately measure usage reductions. An immediate flow reduction was evident. There was a 70% water usage reduction on the floor, and it reduced water usage for the whole plant by 18%.
