This project trialled whether insect bioconversion could transform low-value waste, such as paunch and red offal, into high-value products, including protein meal, oil, and fertiliser.
Partnering with FlyFarm, the three-month pilot produced a protein-rich meal with over 55% protein, high-purity oil, and safe, nutrient-rich frass, while also generating strong interest from the aquafeed and pet food markets.
While the trial proved that the technology and products are feasible, further work is needed to lower capital costs and utilise improved insect strains, making the system commercially viable.
