Processing plants across Australia are becoming increasingly costly to operate and maintain, particularly in terms of energy consumption. Energy consumed in lighting office areas and industrial buildings, although not a major energy consuming end use when compared with refrigeration or steam/hot water generation, represents around 1-2% of total energy use at abattoirs (including electricity and thermal energy sources).
