The project provides an update to the previous analysis undertaken for AMPC in 2016. The economic impact is measured in terms of employment assessed as full-time equivalent (FTE) positions, industry value added and household income with direct and flow-on impacts provided for each metric. The results are provided in absolute values and as a percentage of the relevant economy.
The project was conducted using input output (IO) analysis utilising IO tables constructed for 2018-19 for Australia and subsequently for each relevant State. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics was analysed to determine the number of livestock slaughtered and red meat produced by State and nationally in 2018-19 in order to scale up data provided for individual processing facilities. Public data was also analysed to provide context around employment and industry value added at the national
level.
Additional research was conducted in 2020-21 to provide an updated analysis relating to the socio-economic impact of the red meat processing industry nationally and by state.
