Diathermic syncope stunning technology – commercialisation
This project was undertaken to further the commercial potential of Diathermic Syncope® stunning (DTS) as a method of stunning, acceptable for both routine use and religious harvest. The system continues to demonstrate its ability to meet animal welfare expectations, and further detailed studies have shown potential suitability for kosher and halal harvest.
A new box design will enable retrofitting into small spaces in existing processing establishments and operate at a rate of more than 60 heads per hour. DTS is well-suited for integration into many medium-speed and slower processing plants.
In Australia, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry accept it as meeting the requirements of the Australian Standard and therefore would accept suitable arrangements made for its use. It has received favourable reviews from scientific and animal welfare experts and organisations. The acceptance by other regulatory and religious authorities is in progress.
