Behavioural Change Assessment for AI Monitoring of animal welfare

This project evaluated the monitoring utility and organisational conditions present when using AI-based livestock monitoring systems and if these lead to measurable improvements in animal welfare in commercial beef processing facilities. 

While these systems can detect welfare related events continuously and objectively, their impact depends on how the data is used within the business.
Using AI monitoring data from a commercial facility, supported by staff feedback and Welfare Footprint Framework (WFF) analysis, the project established a baseline of animal handling practices and identified key patterns in behaviour. The results showed that AI monitoring provides a more accurate and complete picture of handling practices than traditional observation, but does not by itself drive improvement.
The report provides guidance for the red meat processing industry on how to implement AI monitoring systems effectively, highlighting the importance of management accountability, structured review processes, and integration with operational decision making.
