Sustainable management of waste and wastewater streams

17 August 2020
Focus area: Waste valorisation and circular economy
Program stream: Industry excellence
Project number: 2020-1030
This project funded the investigation of the use of Tanfloc to improve the overall performance and sustainability of an Australian meat processing plant’s wastewater treatment, including biosolids management. It aimed to bring the plant closer to the Circular Economy concept, whereby products currently considered as waste can be converted to fertiliser, energy or treated water.

This project identified several opportunities for the more sustainable waste management of waste streams including improved performance in the DAF in terms of TSS removal, high quality biosolids from DAF (no metals), potential for the recovery of biogas from the biosolids, and the immobilisation of nitrogen and phosphorous in a clay material for nutrient recovery at treatment ponds.
