Renewable hydrogen cost-benefit analysis for Australian red meat processors

09 May 2022
Focus area: Sustainability
Program stream: Energy
Project number: 2020-1014
This project delivered a literature review and developed the basis for the design of a detailed feasibility study of renewable hydrogen at Australian red meat processing plants.

The feasibility study considered the sources of critical inputs (water and power) and application of outputs (hydrogen and oxygen). Capital cost was estimated, and a cost-benefit analysis was produced to allow an interested industry partner to make an investment decision on hydrogen at their plant.

Hydrogen offers red meat processing plants the following potential advantages:

-    Lower costs
-    Energy security
-    No greenhouse gas emissions
-    Energy storage and utilisation
-    Noise minimisation
-    Co-creation of oxygen and thermal energy
