Environmentally friendly, carbon-negative coagulant for wastewater treatment – full-scale trial

27 February 2025
Focus area: Responsible water management
Program stream: Industry excellence
Project number: 2024-1102

This project conducted a 30-day full-scale trial at a red meat processing plant and demonstrated that Tanfloc, a natural tannin-based coagulant, significantly improved wastewater treatment efficiency, reducing contaminants while lowering chemical dependency and carbon footprint.

The findings highlight its economic viability, with a one-year payback period, and its potential for industry-wide adoption to enhance sustainability and resource recovery. Tanfloc’s seamless integration into existing DAF systems offers a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to metal-based coagulants, supporting the red meat sector’s environmental and decarbonisation goals.
