Trial of new lamb gambrel RFID hooks

12 April 2022
Focus area: Hands-off processing
Program stream: Advanced manufacturing
Project number: 2021-1206
AMPC partnered with an Australian red meat processing plant to further develop and investigate reliable Smallstock RFID embedded gambrels to enable and improve traceability of carcases and gambrels used on smallstock harvest floors, chiller networks and fabrication floors.

As part of the project, 10,000 RFID chips were converted by employees however of the 10,000 RFID chips installed, 20 per cent failed within three-five months of operation.

Learnings were generated from the trial, including the fragile nature of RFID chips when retrofitting them to equipment items like gambrels.
