Focus area: Packaging
Program stream: Sustainability
Project number: 2021-1120
This project investigated the feasibility of using UHF RFID technology in the red meat processing industry to improve traceability and quality control for meat products. This is a continuation of the primal proof of load RFID on-site Stage 1 project which involved testing in a laboratory environment using a prototype RFID tunnel reader.

This project involved the design, build, and commissioning of a production ready RFID tunnel reader with a high enough read accuracy to improve traceability and quality control.

RFID can automate quality control by counting primal meats and verifying stock keeping unitsto guarantee proof of load.

The initial results suggest that the RFID tunnel reader station achieves high RFID label tag read performance. It is recommended that the next phase of the roll out of this technology should include the incorporation of the tunnel in an operational production line, where further verification of the prototype can be completed.
