On Friday, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the announcement of an agreed preferential trade deal between Peru and Australia.
“Australian exporters in agriculture and the services sector will have improved access to the Peru market,” Australian Chamber Director of Trade and International Affairs Bryan Clark said.
Beef tariffs will be eliminated within five years, ensuring Australian beef growers have duty-free access to the Peruvian market at the same time as US farmers. There will be immediate duty-free access for Australian sheep meat.
“Trade policy isn’t just about selling things,” said Mr Clark. “It is about international competition to encourage domestic reforms and drive business growth and productivity. This is what sustains and creates jobs for all Australians.”
The Australia-Peru agreement was negotiated in a record six months. Some agreements have taken up to 10 years to be finalised. It is expected the deal will come into force before mid-2018.
