Assessing SCL technology for reading and recording smallstock EID tags
This project evaluated alternative electronic identification (eID) systems for sheep processors in WA and NSW in preparation for the 2025 eID mandate. Its goal was to reduce dependence on a single supplier by trialling systems from emerging providers.
Beaufort River Meats in WA piloted an eID system from New Zealand-based SCL, known for RFID and cattle traceability. Despite some delays, the system was successfully installed and integrated over a period of 24 weeks. It featured accurate eID capture, full carcass tracking, and easy NLIS data submission, achieving read rates of 98.3% at receival and 100% on the harvest floor.
The trial demonstrated that alternative suppliers, such as SCL, can deliver reliable, tailored, and compliant eID systems. This will help enhance industry resilience, promote competition, and ensure that processors are ready and ahead of the regulatory enforcement.
